Mobile News for Africa

The Windhoek Observer does not currently offer any mobile services but is developing a SMS news alert system and mobile website both to keep their existing readers connected and to increase readership among younger demographics.

The Globe is part of a three-pronged media outlet that includes radio and web. The website, citifmonlne.com, is currently available as a mobile site. Philip would like to expand The Globe’s mobile reach via SMS news alerts and headlines, event announcements and SMS lifestyle tips.

Naija247News is in the process of developing an entire mobile portfolio, including a mobile website, SMS news alert system, mobile city guide, and a mobile money transactions service. They previously had no mobile services, but are very dedicated to taking this step into the market.

Hamar is just entering the mobile market and will be the first newspaper in Somalia to do so. Their goal is to build a system for distribution of mobile news alerts, sports and business updates, as well as providing a tool for calculating foreign currency exchange rates. In a second phase of the project they would like to launch a mobile website for the paper and develop a mobile city guide to accompany that.

Last year, Abidjan Live News trained young, aspiring journalists and ordinary citizens throughout Côte D’Ivoire on how to create news videos for the web using mobile phones. They were tasked with telling digital stories related to their communities and using their mobile phone as a tool for exposing local stories.
